The picture at the bottom is a screen shot of my new
PowerComputing Mac
clone. It is a PowerCenter Pro running at 210 MHz.
You may say "that's not much faster than a comparable
Pentium". However, this processor is much faster
than a Pentium II or Pentium Pro at a given MHz. Not only
that, someone was crazy enough to clock-chip his Mac up to
240 MHz. Next month, even faster 300 MHz Macs
will be available, not to mention multi-processor Macs with
a combined processor speed of 800 MHz.
What you see below are four QuickTime movies playing full
speed, a video feed from CNN Interactive, and a live video
from a Connectix
Color QuickCam. There is also a QuickDraw 3D model of the
Space Station being
rendered at the bottom. Click on the screen shot to get the
full-sized picture.
Folks, this is one fast machine, much better than Apple's own overpriced, underperforming, and unreliable hardware. In fact, my computer is so good that Apple decided to buyout PowerComputing's MacOS hardware line, effectively killing competition, raising prices, and making a lot of people ex-Apple advocates, including yours truly.
[Update: Letter from Steve Jobs to Power Computing customers (September 1997)]
Anyone know where I can get something not made by either Apple or Microsoft?
Looks like I have.... read on....
More screenshots - I have been runing MkLinux, which is a version of Linux for PowerPC-based computers. This offers better stability and performance over the MacOS. Although MkLinux has fewer applications available for it, the important ones have already been ported. In any case, it offers Unix-like stability. I have not been able to crash this OS unlike what I can do on a regular basis with MacOS, Windows95, and yes, even WindowsNT can be brought down easily.
